Commodes and Their Benefits

A commode is a simple free-standing toilet with armrests. It makes life much easier for people with limited mobility and their caretakers. With a solid framework, armrests, and adjustable height, it is easier for many people to use, especially those who require assistance. Commodes are not connected to the plumbing system. Instead, they have a removable basin that is emptied into the toilet. Many also include a fold-down lid.

We offer a big selection of commodes to choose from at our two Southwest Mobility stores in Mesa and Sun City, near Phoenix, Arizona.

Commodes for the Mobility Impaired

Commodes are a useful device for anyone who finds it challenging to get to the bathroom due to continence and/or mobility issues. A bedside commode can enable users to remain at home or independent longer. Sometimes commodes are used for temporary circumstances, such as recovering from an injury or surgery. They can also be a long-term solution. It’s hard to argue with the safety and convenience of having toilet facilities wherever you need them. Commodes can help when the bathroom door is too narrow for a wheelchair, when getting to the bathroom requires going up or downstairs, and even for camping out.

Types of Commodes

We have many types of commodes for sale. Basic commodes are designed to stay in place, so they have legs, not wheels. Portable commodes have small caster wheels. A shower commode is designed to be used while bathing, so it has larger wheels to transport the user. These can function as a commode chair, a shower chair, or both at once. A bariatric commode chair can accommodate larger users, over 300 pounds.

Choosing a Commode

When reviewing commode options, consider the user’s mobility level. Users must capable of standing, turning, and seating themselves onto the commode, with or without a caregiver. After concluding their business, they must be able to stand up again. Many commodes have a drop-arm feature, which makes it easier for some users to mount. When shopping, consider such features as adjustable height, locking wheels, and waterproof, easy-clean materials.
With some commodes, you may place them over the toilet and remove the basin, allowing the user to benefit from the raised seat and armrests while going directly into the toilet. This is a great option when the existing toilet is too low for the user to get up and down, and also when the user needs armrests to get up and down.

Commodes are an inexpensive solution that can have a huge positive impact on the mobility-impaired as well as their caregivers. If you need help deciding on the right commode, please contact our excellent staff at our two Southwest Mobility stores in Sun City and Mesa, near Phoenix, Arizona.
