Stairlift Safety Guidelines

If you depend on a stairlift to navigate your home, you should use it with care. These devices are generally safe and reliable, but they can pose a safety hazard when used incorrectly. The following safety tips from Southwest Mobility can help you avoid an accident and make the most of your equipment!

Are you still in the market for a stairlift? If so, come shop our selection here at Southwest Mobility. You can find us in Mesa and Sun City, AZ.

One User at a Time

First and foremost, keep in mind that stairlifts are not designed to transport more than one user at a time. That means you should never take your grandkids along for the ride, no matter how much they beg and plead! Instead, protect yourself and your equipment by riding solo.

Mind the Weight Limit

Remember never to exceed the weight limit for your stairlift. Of course, that begins with choosing a stairlift that can easily accommodate your weight. You can hold a small item or two when riding your stairlift, but never use your stairlift to transport large, heavy items.

Keep the Stairs Clear

Before operating a stairlift, always make sure the stairs have been cleared of any obstacles that could get in the way. Keep in mind that even small obstacles, like torn carpets and loose floorboards, could interfere with the stairlift mechanism.

Use the Seatbelt

Just like a car, your stairlift comes with a seatbelt – make sure to use it! This will keep you safe and secure in the event that the stairlift comes to a sudden stop.

Fold the Seat

When you have reached your destination, remember to collapse the seat of your stairlift. This will prevent it from being an obstacle to other people using the stairs.

Keep Up with Maintenance

Last but not least, always maintain your stairlift in accordance with the user manual. This volume will explain how to keep your stairlift in good working order, and how to troubleshoot common problems. Whatever you do, never attempt to operate a broken stairlift! This can be dangerous, and it can make the problem a lot worse.
