Walker Safety Tips

When you start using a walker, it might feel awkward at first, or even a little unsafe. This is only natural, and it gets easier with practice! However, there are some important safety tips to keep in mind when using a walker, especially when you are first starting out. Read on for a quick guide to walker safety from the folks at Southwest Mobility!

Standing Up

Of course, the first step to using a walker is to get on your feet. For some of us, this is easier said than done! When it comes time to stand up and use your walker, make sure the walker is placed in front of you, with the open side facing toward you. All four tips (or wheels) of the walker should be touching the floor.

Lean forward slightly, and use your arms to help you stand up. Never pull on the walker to help you stand up – instead, use the armrests of your chair, or ask for a helping hand. Once you are upright, you can grab the handles of the walker and start moving forward.

Taking Steps

In order to walk with your walker, you will need to lift or push your walker forward, then make sure all four tips (or wheels) of the walker are planted on the ground before taking a step. Remember to step forward with your weaker leg first, then move your stronger leg in front of it. Take it slow, and do your best to maintain good posture when using a walker.

Sitting Down

When you are ready to sit down after using a walker, back up slowly until your seat touches the backs of your legs. Make sure all four tips (or wheels) of your walker are touching the floor before lowering yourself down to a seated position. When possible, hold onto an armrest or a grab bar as you sit down. Remember to ask for assistance if you need it!

Dealing with Stairs

Stairs can definitely be a challenge at first. They are not exactly designed with walkers in mind, and you might prefer to take the elevator when possible. But you will probably have to negotiate a staircase at some point, and the more you practice it, the easier it will get.

When going up the stairs with your walker, place the walker on the step above you, then lead with your stronger leg. On the way down, place the walker on the step below you, then lead with your weaker leg. Make sure to hold your walker close to your body as you climb the stairs.
