How to Safely Walk with a Cane
Walking canes are an invaluable tool for many people with mobility impairments. They can make walking safer and easier, but walking with a cane is not entirely without risk. In fact, new cane users might find it harder to get around at first, and they could be more prone to falls. The following tips from Southwest Mobility can help you become a confident cane user!
Are you still in the market for a cane? We have a great selection of walking aids for sale here at Southwest Mobility. You can find us in Mesa and Sun City, AZ.
Know Your Cane
First things first: practice using your cane around the house or on a level sidewalk until you are comfortable with it. Over time, your cane will start to feel like a natural extension of your arm, and you will have much greater control over your movements with it.
Watch the Ground
Remember to pay attention to the ground as you walk. Watch out for uneven terrain, wet surfaces, and obstacles in your way. You can also use your cane to feel the ground ahead of you and prepare for any changes in the terrain.
Look Ahead
Although you want to be aware of the terrain, you should avoid staring straight down as you walk. Remember to look ahead and be aware of your surroundings, too! This will help you navigate around pedestrians and other obstacles that may appear in your path.
Practice Good Posture
Try to hold your head up and keep your spine straight as you walk. Doing so will help to keep your balance, and reduce the pressure on your back and legs. Standing up straight will also make you more visible to others around you, and help you avoid collisions.
Keep It Up
Last but not least, don't be too discouraged if walking with a cane feels clumsy at first – with enough time and practice, it will become second nature! Just make sure to take it slow while you are first getting started, and always put safety first.
